The conclusion to our brainstorming is a project that is geared toward second graders working in science. The ultimate goal of this project is for students to be able to compare and contrast the living environments, eating conditions, community, etc. Students will be able to choose from a list of animals pre-selected by teachers with resource links for the students to use and research their animal. The students will also be in groups that have been selected by the teacher. Each group will need to produce their own 3D (shoebox) model of a realistic habitat for their animal. We will be bringing in an expert from the local zoo, who will show the students pictures and videos of animals that they have in their zoo. Students will be able to ask the expert from the zoo any and all questions that they may have about the animal that they have selected for their project. Ultimately, the classroom will be turned into a zoo with multiple exhibits created by the student groups and the students will be orally explaining what they have learned from their research. To tie this project all together and into the curriculum, the teacher will be responsible for leading a class discussion with the SMART board and prompting the students with questions that make them evaluate what they have learned about not only their animal, but also about other animals that other groups in their class researched. The teacher should lead this discussion based on the curriculum goal of comparing and contrasting the environments of different animals. Students should be able to understand why certain animals cannot live with other animals or in other climates/regions, etc.
